We are walking out to my car together.  Her tiny frame pushes a cart draped with grocery bags that is almost as tall as her.  I wonder how long she has worked at this commissary and then I hear, “What is happening?”

She must have overheard the conversation with a clerk about the government shutting down and what it would mean for our commissary.

I tell her in the best way I know how and she looks worried. I encourage that hopefully our congress can come to an agreement.  I can barely understand her thick accent but I listen hard.

”They shouldn’t have reelected him. He didn’t make a thing better and they just shouldn’t have put him back in”.  I smile.

We talk about how the money she makes is only through tips and we both know if our government shuts down the commissaries do as well, taking out her small income. I worry for her but assure her that things may work out after all.

I read people mocking this government shut down, joking with one another via social media about how it’s no big deal and nothings going to change. I am irritated at their lack of compassion and understanding.

To some people it does make a big difference.  I realize the government is rushing down a slippery slope and I thank God for stability found only in Him.  We plan as best we can in the emergency of a paycheck not coming in but I delight in knowing who cares for us.

Today I am praying for those who aren’t receiving their income. For our president and congress to lay down pride and stop waving their pointing finger at who is to blame.  But mostly for a country that would turn back to honor God. Will you pray as well?
