On Loving Better

luke

What do I hate?

Selfishness: devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one’s own interests, benefits, welfare, regardless of others.

It’s easy to see in others but hard to see in myself.
As a mother there are moments I’m looking to catch a break because the day-to-day giving is exhausting. I’m thankful for grace on those days! I forget that these days will have a huge impact on my son’s future.  I’m concerned about my wants and needs above his.

Chuck Swindoll puts it best, “We are sinful people—sinners by nature, through choice and from birth.”

Luke 9:23 – And he said to [them] all, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Dying to self is a choice we make daily or at times moment to moment.

I would give my life for this child,

IMAG1285

but I don’t always give him my time or attention.
Please don’t misunderstand, he is not neglected but I know he could use a lot more than what I do give. How often do I pull out the coloring book and sit with him in a rush to check the internet or clean up the mess around us?
As a stay at home mother we have a large quantity of time together but that doesn’t translate to quality time.
While I’m desperate for a break he’s desperate for my attention.
I can be very selfish about my time and I hate that.

Garrett Newborn Portraits (108) edited

The Lord entrusted this child to me.

*I have to intentionally raise this child*
That is why i’m begging God to show me boundaries and ways I can step back from the things I put before him.  Ahem. The internet.
My husband graciously offered a solution to hop on the internet during nap times or after bedtime.  I’m all about it!
Garrett is in his formative years and he needs his momma more than anyone else needs me now.  I don’t want to miss out on loving him better, in ways he needs.

I don’t think you will see much difference on this blog because on my end i’ll simply be managing time better but I’d love your prayers as I train myself to not flip open this laptop so often.

Thanks for letting me share the good and the bad.
How are you intentional about loving each of your children? Advice is welcome here!

Until next time,

First, I want to tell you that I read the title at first glance as “on loving butter,” which made me really excited. However, your post was much better than loving butter.

I feel like a couple of months ago, when I was REALLY exhausted with the whole pregnancy and toddler thing, I felt like I was just letting our days happen to us, and I was emotionally worn out. I heard a sermon (at our college ministry – totally not focused toward parenting) about enduring and having a purpose, and it really gave me a fresh breath on living out our day with intention. I totally connect with your post here, because sometimes, I don’t stop and see Liam as purposefully as I should, and I don’t give him the right parts of me (or maybe it’s giving myself with the right attitude).

Anyway, long comment to say I love this post and the heart here. Thanks for sharing.

    Also, I do love butter.
