Meet Laura

Hi! I’m Laura.

Some of you already know most everything about me, while others are brand new, wondering who I am and what this blog is all about.

I love that you’re here and am trying to picture you across the table asking those simple introduction questions when you first meet someone.

Are you married?
I married Darren over 5 years ago! Where does the time go?  He is a Sailor in the United States Navy, and I’m really proud of him! He is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. While we often clash because we’re as different as night and day.  We see how God uses those differences to complement the other one but that doesn’t make marriage any easier! I love that man more and more each year and thank God for him.

What do you do?
For the last 3 years I have been a stay-at-home mother. I love being available and present for Garrett (almost 3-years-old!). It’s a sacrifice financially but well worth it.

I have been known to get overwhelmed with all the responsibility as a mom but I wouldn’t want it any other way!

What are some things that make you really happy?
Waking up in the morning and pouring a cup of warm coffee and then pouring too much flavored creamers in it.  It’s ridiculous how much I dump in. I’m not ready to surrender this over indulgence!

I love connecting with someone over a deep conversation. Going for a long walk or hike while appreciating God’s creation. I’m from the Midwest and am happy to greet all four seasons! Traveling is fun but there is nothing like being in the comfort of our home.

I was once told that I’m a comedian’s gift because I laugh at everything.
Some people are clever and witty and say the funniest things, that was not God’s gift to me! But I certainly love a good laugh with them.

How would you describe yourself?
I love writing and have kept a journal ever since I was a young girl. It’s a passion and even if this website crashed or no eyes read these words, I’d still be scribbling down words on paper. If you were to know one thing that’s not seen from the outside, you’d find a deep-thinker and a woman sensitive to others and herself. It gets me in trouble but it’s also the quality that allows me to love so many different people.

Are you a religious person?
If you stick around here long, eventually you’ll start to see the name of God.  I’m sure this turns a lot of people away but I hope that people see a girl who loves her God, whole-heartedly.

I don’t believe that Christianity is as black and white as some have made it appear. God’s grace grabbed a hold of me and freed me long ago. I am learning to live a balance between grace and obedience to God’s word.

If you could learn one random skill, what would you learn?
Ice skating! I seize every opportunity provided to pull on a pair of ice skates and glide along smooth ice.

At my parent’s home there is a pond we would shovel off and I would slip into big blue bulky skates and have the time of my life.

That’s enough about me! How about we talk a little about what Embracing This Life is.

Three years ago I started to keep a blog titled ‘The Life of a Young Navy Wife’.  I had blogged many years before this but we’ll start here. It was a place to write about the experiences as a navy wife and other daily happenings.

In the years that followed a neat community of people gathered around and I wanted to make this blog more organized and easy to navigate so I learned how to build a website.  I changed the name to something more fitting. I was learning to embrace all that God was calling our family to at the time and that’s how this site was named.

It’s my hope and prayer that this blog would be used to encourage you. While I really do enjoy writing about deeper matters, I realize sometimes it’s important to have a balance so I’ll post a recipe or something light-hearted from time to time.

Please join us if you haven’t yet and to those that have read, thank you for knowing all that you do about me and still coming back. I thank God for you often!

Laura-I really enjoy keeping up with you through your blog. You are a very strong young lady and I look up to you-have for years now. It may be hard to believe but I (and others) have a lot to learn from you. I love reading about your relationship with God as I learn about mine as well. Take care! Cortny Barnes (Kramer)

I love that you have followed along with my blog. :) I wanted you to know that your speech class was one of my favorite classes in high school. It really deepened my love for public speaking, thank you for being a teacher that cared! Thank you for the comment!

I have silently been following your blog and must now admit that I find solace in the fact that I am not alone… Also a follower of Christ, a mother and a spouse I often find myself getting lost in the daily details and missing out on finding myself in Christ…

Just want to send a big THANK YOU for your writings which always bring me back to center, keep up the great work~

I found your information on Pinterest and I read a lot of good comments about your book and your blog. I would love to receive a copy of your book, if possible.

I am not very tech savvy and I requested to subscribe to your blog and a book but I didn’t show that it has processed.

I see the blog comments are dates a last year or year prior. I am not sure if you still have a blog or not. Although, I would love to read the book that your wrote.

Thank you for your blog and I look forward to hearing from you.

    God bless!

I stumbled across your blog through Pinterest. And you may not even blog anymore. But just after reading some posts and things you have to say, I just felt the need to reach out. I’m 24 and two months away from marrying a lieutenant in the Army. We will live long distance (3 hours, so not that long) for the first month of our marriage (I’m a first grade teacher in a different town). As soon as I finish the school year, he will deploy for 9 months. And like you and your husband, my fiancé and I are very very very different. We argue about little things, petty things that don’t matter. Sometimes we’re both just too sensitive. Some days I feel doubt creep in about marrying him but there’s a voice in the back of head that keeps telling me I’m doing the right thing, that I should marry him. And as a believer I’d like to believe that voice is the Holy Spirit.
And I’ll be honest…I’m anxious about so many things-marriage, deployment, change, moving towns…pretty much everything. Any advice for a new young military wife?
Thank you for sharing your heart.
